Jari’s Recommendations:

The Body Has a Mind of Its Own
Authors: Sandra Blakeslee, Matthew Blakeslee

I’m energized by the information in this book!

Marry Your Muse
Author: Jan Phillips

A friend recommended this book a few months ago and I’ve since used it as a resource to get me centered. Excellent stories, examples, exercises, and quotes.

Artist’s Way
Author: Julia Cameron

This is my favorite from Julia Cameron. Thirteen years ago this book jump-started my creativity in ways that still inspire my writing. I think this is a must for artists of any kind who want to explore their creativity at deeper levels.

Thinking Body, Dancing Mind
Authors: Chungliang Al Huang, Jerry Lynch

This book appears to be about athletic endeavors, but the wisdom and excellent writing cross over for unexpected ah-hahs.

Robert Louis Stevenson: Dreams of Exile
Author: Ian Bell

My favorite biography of a writer who defied convention. The inspiring story of how he wrote the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is worth the cost of the book alone.

Crossing the Unknown Sea
Author: David Whyte

David Whyte’s prose is like his poetry – deep, beautiful, honest, and engaging. This is his personal story of finding his life’s work that brings meaning and how others can do the same.

Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life
Author: Gregg Michael Levoy

This is my most tattered book ever. Levoy has stories of people who have made life-changing leaps to follow their passions. This book and The Artist’s Way are the two books I’ve given as gifts more times than I can remember.

Pathways to Bliss
Authors: Joseph Campbell, David Kudler

I’m currently reading this book by Joseph Campbell and am swept away.

A Woman’s Path
Authors: Lucy McCauley, Amy Greimann Carlson

I’ve read these essays over and over for the moving travel adventures and the lively writing.

Writing the Mind Alive
Authors: Linda Trichter Metcalf, Simon Tobin

This book and the writing techniques it details should have much more recognition than it has. I found the book by accident a couple years ago and use the technique five days a week. I don’t want you to wait as long as I did for this different and very deep writing experience.

The Poet’s Companion
Authors: Kim Addonizio, Dorianne Laux

I enjoy the exercises and examples in this book by two poets.

The Meaning of Barns
Author: Jari Thymian

Kindle

The Kindle is on my wish list. A friend has one and loves it. I imagine traveling for extended periods with it loaded with a personal library of my favorite books.
